The crucifix only works if it’s placed in the ghost room before the hunt starts. If the ghost spawns within 3 meters of the crucifix (5 meters for the banshee), the hunt will be prevented

Also candles have always gone out randomly. Another side note, you need to point the thermometer at the ground for it to update.
