  1. The candle acts as a crucifix for the onryo. If it blows out the candle it can attempt to hunt without using the crucifix – which is what happened here. The onryo prioritises the candle over the crucifix, this is a feature for the onryo and a way to test for this ghost when doing no evidence games.

edit. Seems the ghost spawned on the stairs in the basement and targeted you over your teammate ignoring the lit candle, I'm unsure but if you had a cursed hunt after using the possessed item or set the grace period lower in the custom settings, that would explain the almost instant spawning on you and killing you feel.

  2. Oh dang. Even if it's like Calvin's comment suggests, was there a grace period at the start of the hunt? It sounded like just one second into the hunt you were dead. I feel like even on professional and nightmare there are still at least a few seconds?

  3. At first I thought maybe the crucifix wasn't in the correct room, like maybe the ghost's room was a side closet that was very close by.

But I know nothing about the candle ghost and how it interacts with candles, so no idea about it in that regard.

  4. From what I understand: When the ghosts decide to hunt, they are standing at an "origin" point for the hunt. They run a check for crucifixes (and candles, in the case of the Onryo), and once it has determined it can hunt, it will randomly select a (visible) spawn point within 3 meters of the origin point– which might randomly be much closer to a crucifix or candle. It looks like the "origin" point for this ghost was the stairs, but it's "spawn" point was in the basement and your grace period was very short. Bad luck, but it didn't look like a bug to me.
