The candle throwing thing was patched awhile back because it was a glitch. For an onryo, you can test for it by lighting candles and dropping crucifixes on top of them once you are low enough sanity for it to hunt. If it blows out candles instead of burning crucifixes and it stops hunting, its an onryo. Another test you can use that's more dangerous is just lighting one candle. If it blows out a candle it has a chance to hunt. I forget the exact percentages. Onryos have increased chance to blow out candles as well which just makes this test more dangerous. The first test is better because it's less dangerous, but if you're feeling more daring you can do the second test.
