Is the thermometer still viable? – Phasmophobia (Solo Professional, Asylum)

Hello! There has been another update to the thermometer (only on the Beta branch) where rooms will now heat up and cool down more slowly after the power has been turned on or off respectively.
In this video I’ll be testing how useful the thermometer is on larger maps, Asylum in this case, as a standalone item to find the ghost room.

I stream on Twitch!

How to install the beta branch update on Steam:
Right click on Phasmophobia
Click Properties
Click on the Beta tab
From the dropdown box, choose ‘beta – Unstable build’
The update will then install automatically

  1. I like the temp changes so far, it gives it a more realistic feel. Now the next step is answering why the breaker for a large building can only take a few lights, when really there are multiple breakers for large areas and multiple circuits too…

  2. Before this update I had a ghost on asylum that made the whole basement freezing cold and some of the upstairs cold. It was really difficult to find the exact room but we figured it out when it was hunting

  3. With the new thermometer changes, and especially with the larger maps, I found it's best to enter the building and turn on the power asap. Then drop your tools at the main entrance and head back to the truck to get more stuff. This allows time for the temps to normalize a tad. Otherwise your sanity drops too much. Well in a 4 player game anyway.

  4. I really like that they're trying to find ways to keep people from just doing the same cookie cutter process each game. It gets tedious and repetitive. Dusktheviking likes to switch up the gear just for fun and I do too because I know I'd lose some interest in the game if it was always "grab tools A, B, and C"

  5. I need to play more but I do think in nerfing the thermo they are gonna have to buff other things. parabolic is so hit and miss ive never reliably found the room from far away with it and if you sweep with emf u might not get anything even tho its the right room and then your already walking around checking every other room pointlessly. While i think its cool theyr forcing more sanity drain and the breaker to be more important, I think on a large map they seriously risk the search for the correct room being so tedious and boring that you just play houses all the time. I already found larger maps tedious if it took over 5 mins to find the room, and then the long walks to and from it for more gear once you have it. I do however welcome all these changes as far as houses are concerned as you often find the room a bit too fast and totally ignore the breaker in the smaller maps. I just worry the changes on larger maps will put me off ever wanting to do them. perhaps they should yield more payouts or something in return?

  6. I think maybe some of the more "dangerous" changes – like the ghost opening doors during hunts, should be on professional or maybe intermediate too, but not on amateur? I feel like that would make it a bit easier for new players to stay alive during hunts.

  7. Now the Mare got also buffed and is a "stronger" ghost in my opinion. He killed 2 of us even before we could reach the circuit break in Highschool. But unfortunately the game is still too easy

  8. "Encourage you to use multiple pieces of equipment"…. Still can only carry two and a torch. I think if the lighter was just a button rather than one of the three spaces it would be better. A simple change but currently you always need it to smudge so smudge sticks always take 2 spaces

  9. Hmm…I haven't heard news of the fix for the parabolic mic. IIRC it has a bit of a bug but I can't remember what. If it still persists then the only other item to find the ghost room is the EMF Reader and perhaps the 3 sensors.

  10. I like it that the temperature is down when the power is off. What I dont like is that the ghost can turn the power off again even if the power station is miles away from its ghost room.

  11. I welcome the changes. I do like the parabolic microphone to find the ghost room. It's more efficient to use the parabolic mic and then confirm with the thermometer anyway. The range on the parabolic mic is quite small though so I do have trouble using it on the larger maps. Practice makes perfect though and I could always try placing sensors down for once to help me out (unless I am solo)

  12. personally I feel the current patch is far from perfect, right now on big maps- by the time you find the ghost room your sanity will already have dropped below to the point where the ghost'll start hunting prior to you even finding the ghost room- so they need to buff the sound equipment to balance this out better so you might be able to detect roughly where the ghost is hiding out maybe.
Now i'll admit, I'm not a game dev so I don't know the slightest about balancing these things, and I do like the new updates but it def needs some tweaking~

  13. Nuzzgard! I remember a few months ago when you were excited for 500 subs, now you got over 31k! I think I started following around the 1000 mark. Love your vids

  14. See, I don't think other people need encouragement. Those who want a challenge, those who don't want to use a thermometer- can just… not use it. It's not a competitive game that needs a lot of balancing, in my opinion, and even with a thermometer, you can still get difficult games. Then again, it is more realistic

  15. I have mixed feelings about it. Yes, thermo definitely was "too good" but then again, having the nerfs to certain equipment correspond to difficulty might be better than this since right now I see absolutely no reason to play asylum or prison. Those maps already took long to find the room in more often than not, and now with this it's definitely put me off from playing them.

  16. I mean… I literally just started playing and I assumed using multiple pieces of equipment was a thing… Like I go in with thermometer and emf and sweep each room with that… I don't know enough about this game to understand why people are upset. I mean it's essentially a mystery game, sussing out the details is the game…

  17. Haven't tried the beta branch yet but I am sooooo curious about the changes they made there! Those thermometer changes actually sound like they make the game a lot harder. We pretty much always use the thermometer to find the ghost room, other methods have not been working for us too well so far (except for finding an open door that was not supposed to be open). I tried the microphone a few times but haven't been able to find anything with it. But I actually do like that they nerf the thermometer as it felt way too powerful to me and even a bit boring to just use that item all the time. I am curious how my group will adapt to those changes once they arrive on the main branch. Hope the next update rolls out soon. 🙂

  18. In one of your videos on this map before the thermo change when. You took a long time to find the ghost room. I was like oh its awfully warm for being a basement in an abandoned asylum.
