Using squawk box in actual room where ghost spawns will yield the best results. Sometimes the spirit requires you to be alone to ask questions. Correct me if I am wrong, but, I have always been under the impression that when you smudge a area it calms down the spirit. So if you are trying to get it to be active…

You can't hold the crucifix for it to actually work you have to set it down somewhere
I'd love to walk y'all through some of the things in the game to help y'all out
The crucifix prevents the ghost from hunting, you have to drop the crucifix in the ghosts spawn room, and if the ghost tries to begin a hunt near the crucifix it won't hunt and the crucifix will disappear. The crucifix has a certain effective radius,(3 meters I think) so you may need multiple to prevent a hunt if the ghost's room is large.
You can use the candles that are in the house.
