phasmophobia is a paranormal horror game developed and published by british indie game studio kinetic games. it is based primarily on the popular hobby of ghost hunting. the game became available in early access through steam for microsoft windows with virtual reality support in september 2020. the game received a large influx of popularity the following month due to many well-known twitch streamers and youtubers playing it, mainly for the halloween season.[1] on october 15 of the same year, the game was the sixth-most popular game on twitch.[2] it was the best selling game on steam globally for several weeks in october to november 2020.[3]

phasmophobia is a horror investigation survival game played from a first-person perspective. the player works solo or in a group with up to three other players to complete a contract in which they must identify the type of ghost haunting the specified site. players can communicate through voice chat, both locally within a short distance and globally via walkie-talkies. phasmophobia features speech recognition[4][5] allowing certain pieces of equipment, cursed possessions, and even the ghost to hear players speaking and understand key words and phrases. gathering evidence to determine the correct ghost type and surviving will net the majority of the cash and xp, but completing objectives and taking photos will augment or even double the rewards. investigators are encouraged to complete as much as possible to level up and earn money to unlock maps, levels, and item upgrades.

players must monitor their stamina level and weight carried visible on the heads-up display, as stamina can be depleted by sprinting, swimming, and carrying objects. they can gain money from selling collected scrap, which can be used to purchase items using a terminal console inside their ship.[2] players can also collect these said items without having to buy them. items like flashlights can be used to navigate through dark areas, melee weapons such as a shovel and a stop sign to fight hostile creatures, stun grenades to stun enemies when thrown, a ranged weapon called a “zap gun” that acts as a taser and immobilizes the enemy temporarily, a walkie-talkie to communicate with other players outside of proximity chat, and ship decorations.[3]

the game offers seven different hazard levels in total, depending on the respective moon, which dictates what type of creatures there will be and how many enemies the player may encounter on the moon.[better source needed][unreliable source?] there is additionally a rank system that depends on the player’s skill and success in missions.[4]
