Crucifixs have a radius of two meters around it when on the ground (unless it is a banshee then it is 4 meters), if the ghost tries to start a hunt within that radius, it will use the crucifix, you just have to get it to hunt and then hope you are lucky enough to have it in the right place.
To repel said ghost while being chased, light a smudge stick as it is chasing you and it will slow it down/repel it.
