I tried to take a picture of the crucifix that was just chillin on the floor and it also didnt count >:( I think the "placing" instead of dropping makes it bugged or smth.

Photos are broken since forever, one way or the other you always get cheated out of some perfect picture or even game.
Anyway I have a couple neat tricks to share to more quickly rule out the shade: 1) it started hunting while it was near you in the ghost room, which a shade cannot do, and 2) although I don't know 100% for sure but I believe a shade always appears as a shadow in the summoning circle
