Polter can try to explode a pile but the outer items smother the attempt. That's something that can happen, which is why having a wide pile is better than a tall one. All items affected are given height to their toss anyway so it's just as effective energy wise. The problem with a tall pile ends up being that the bottom items collide with the top items, and the top items get tossed with a delay and after blocking what's below it
