The sprit box actually shows the red light if the box itself recognizes a phrase the ghost can respond to, it doesn't light up if the ghost hears you, that's misleading in the description in the shop. The best way to get a response on the spirit box is to go straight to where the ghost shows after a ghost event, make sure the room lights are off (not flashlights), and ask your questions. As you've found out, the white light is the ghost responding.
